Perfect Pitch & Powerful Futures: Inside the 2026 Smithtown IAB Speed Networking Competition

Okay… can we talk about the energy in that room?!

On January 15, I had the privilege of attending the 2026 Perfect Pitch Speed Networking Competition hosted by the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board and let me just say, this was not your typical school event. This was real-world business in action.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you combine ambition, preparation, and opportunity… this is it.

Where Learning Meets the Real World

For nearly 50 years, the Smithtown IAB has built powerful partnerships between industry and education to create what they call a “Real World Relevant Living Learning Environment.” And you can feel that mission the second you walk in.

Following the 2023 Long Island Economic Impact Study, three skills were identified as critical for today’s workforce:

  • Soft Skills

  • Technical Skills

  • Critical Thinking Skills

This competition was intentionally designed to strengthen these three skills, and wow, did these students rise to the occasion.

The Training: Setting the Stage

Before competition day, over 30 Smithtown IAB Student Ambassadors participated in a virtual training session led by Maria Frey of ECNY Foundation Inc. and Ryan Reilly of Rhysome Consulting Inc..

They weren’t just practicing lines. They were refining:

  • How to present themselves professionally

  • How to think on their feet

  • How to communicate value clearly

  • How to walk into a room and own it

As someone who works in marketing and branding every day, let me tell you - these are skills that matter.

From 60-Second Pitches to the Boardroom Finals

The library at Smithtown High School West was completely transformed into a live networking arena. Students rotated through multiple networking rounds where they had just 60 seconds to pitch themselves to industry partners.

Sixty seconds. That’s it.

You could feel the nerves and the adrenaline but more importantly, you could see growth happening in real time. From those rounds, finalists advanced to the Boardroom Finals, where things went next-level.

In a game-show style setup, students selected a briefcase containing a real business challenge in marketing, human resources, or business management and had to present their solution in front of a panel. No scripts. No do-overs. Just confidence, preparation, and critical thinking.

Huge congratulations to the winners 👏

The room was filled with support from administrators and special guests, including Long Island Regent Felicia and Thomas Williams, who shared how inspired she was watching the advisory board in action.

And honestly? I understand why. This is what real education-industry partnership looks like.

Why This Matters (And Why I Love Being Part of It)

Being back at Smithtown High School West for the 2026 Perfect Pitch Speed Networking Competition honestly filled my cup. As a board member and judge with Smithtown IAB, I got to watch these students pitch real business ideas with confidence, energy, and so much heart.

And let me tell you… they impressed me. Big time.

Every pitch was more than a presentation, it was a confidence boost. A leadership moment. You could actually see it click for them: “Wait… I can do this.” That spark? That’s everything.

I’m so grateful to play this role in supporting the next generation. It’s a reminder that giving back matters and these students are more than ready.

If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, mentoring, or supporting programs like this, let’s connect. ✨
